Billed as “Arduino for the web,” Meemoo is a project to enable anyone to build their own web apps, not just coders. Through a drag-and-drop interface that recalls Yahoo! Pipes, users can direct data through chains of open source modules to build interactive web applications. The developers boast that “if you can connect a video player to a TV, you can program a Meemoo app,” and while in reality the tool is a bit more complicated than that, the metaphor works.

The project is still in development, and is currently focused on interactive audio/visual applications, as demonstrated by the simple demo currently available, which converts webcam video to an animated .gif, and then uploads it to image hosting service imgur. The potential applications are far more sophisticated, however. In this video (which slightly recalls the dance segment in the Saturday Night Live skit “Sprockets”) Meemoo serves as live VJ software in a dance club. In it, the VJ uses a Meemoo app to capture, manipulate, and project video from webcams in real-time.
