Civic hackathons are about making things happen. At civic hackathons, passionate people of all kinds come together to solve shared problems. You don’t need to be a coder, you just need to care. They help communities like Austin build strong ties between talented designers and developers and the countless organizations and individuals that work daily to make the city a better place. The diverse experiences, expertise, and ingenuity of residents can help shape what gets built at civic hackathons, and improve their resonance and relevance with citizens at large.
That’s why if you are in Austin September 8th, you should join the Code for America crew, Neighborland’s Matthew Hall, and Shareable's Tech and Government editor Paul M. Davis for Code Across Austin, a civic hackathon being held at Conjunctured in East Austin. This is the second hackathon in Austin sponsored by Code for America, which has been working in Austin throughout 2012 developing the inspiring disaster-preparedness application Prepared.ly. This time around, you’ll have the chance to work with the newly-released Neighborland API, take part in the Google Places Challenge with their Places API use datasets from the City of Austin, and more.
Code for America fellows Emily Wright Moore, Aurelio Tinio, and Joe Merante are using Neighborland to ask everyone “What should we build at the Code Across Austin hackathon?“. You can see ideas generated in response to the question at the Neighborland page for the ATX hackathon, where you can also submit, suggest, and discuss your own ideas.
Whether you are able to join the fun on Saturday or not, you have the power to share your ideas to volunteers that are going to commit their time, energy and talent to creating something that makes Austin a better place.
