Join Shareable on February 23rd at 1pm Pacific for a panel discussion about how to go local after COVID-19. While many will want to stretch their legs after months of pandemic lockdown, keeping some aspects of local life and even deepening them may be needed to help combat challenges like climate change and extreme wealth inequality. Our discussion will explore the structural drivers and barriers to a more local, civically engaged, and sustainable way of life including how COVID-19 changed the prospects for more localized living and economies. The discussion will offer a mix of practical advice, systemic analysis of the current state of local economies, and visionary scenarios for the future. Three expert panelists will take the discussion from the personal, lived experience level to the structural changes needed for a crisis-averting social-ecological transition. The discussion will include considerations such as race, class, place, infrastructure, and market structure. However, we’ll do this with a minimum of formality in something akin to a fireside chat. Shareable’s Executive Director Neal Gorenflo will kick things off by briefly sharing his lessons learned from a just concluded, year-long life experiment in living local. This will be the starting point for a higher-level discussion with Stacy Mitchell, Executive Director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), and futurist Jose Ramos, Director of Action Foresight. The discussion will also launch Shareable’s new e-book based on Gorenflo’s year of living locally and ILSR’s top resources for going local. All attendees will get a copy of the ebook after the event. Expert panelists: Stacy Mitchell is co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and directs its Independent Business Initiative, which produces research and analysis, and partners with a broad range of allies to design and implement policies to reverse corporate concentration and strengthen local enterprise. Mitchell’s award-winning reports and articles about the dangers of concentrated economic power have influenced policymakers, journalists, and advocates in the U.S. and beyond. Jose Ramos, Ph.D is an academically-trained futurist and director of Action Foresight, a leading provider of foresight services to a broad range of organizations across sectors to help them envision and create the future they want. His recent research explores the concept and emerging trend of cosmo-local production, which is epitomized by the design global, make local ethos of makerspaces, hackerspaces, and fablabs everywhere. Neal Gorenflo is the Executive Director of Shareable, an award-winning nonprofit news outlet, action network, and consultancy focused on the latest innovations in resource sharing. He’s an author, speaker, consultant, activist, and editor of multiple books including, “Sharing Cities: Activating the Urban Commons.” In 2011, he co-founded the Sharing Cities movement, now in over 100 cities worldwide. He helps organizations and governments around the world meet their goals through sharing. He's recently concluded blogging a one-year life experiment called, The Year of Living Locally, to explore a more coherent, commons-based, and sustainable local lifestyle.
