Little Free Libraries have become beloved neighborhood landmarks that have circulated an estimated 40 million books through 25,000 volunteer-built branches. But what about book deserts, i.e. places where books are scarce? Little Free Libraries could be the solution.
A new Little Free Library crowdfunding campaign aims to double the number of Little Free Libraries to 50,000 by 2017, and get more Little Free Libraries in low-income communities. To reach this goal, the nonprofit behind the campaign plans to do the following:
- Build hundreds of new Little Free Libraries
- Water book deserts by providing free books to low-income communities
- Help teachers provide books to their students that they can take home to enjoy and build their reading skills during summer and year-round,
- Provide police departments with Libraries of Understanding that will help them engage with local youth and encourage them to read
With just a few days to go, the crowdfunding campaign has raised over $37,000 of its $50,000 goal. Help push them over the top by supporting the Little Free Library Kickstarter project.
