City living is all the rage. The diverse people, vibrant street life, rich cultural offerings, career opportunities, and easy access to a myriad of amenities are a big draw. But there's another side to city living that doesn’t get as much play at Shareable: the sardine-like over-crowdedness, inconsiderate neighbors, public transport bullies, and stinky-ass garbage piles.

But where there’s a problem, there are artists. To counter these daily struggles, illustrator Nathan Pyle created NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, a collection of cartoons filled with witty tips for urban newcomers which shines an amusing light on some of the obvious, and not-so-obvious, aspects of city living. While the focus here is on New York City, most of the below tips translate to any big, bustling city. Here are 18 of Pyle’s top tips:

1. The subway pole is for sharing.

2. If you're wondering if you're in line, you're probably not.

3. Love is great and all, but don't hog the sidewalk.

4. Check your surroundings before you take that big, chest-opening breath.

5. Just because we sardine sometimes doesn't mean we want to be sardining all the time.

6. Don't fret too hard about being confused. Time heals all things.

7. You may have to make some wiggle room for your standards.

8. Never take the whole sidewalk. It's inconsiderate, you might get trampled and you give yourself away as a city newbie.

9. You're free to do whatever the hell you want on the sidewalk, just don't block it.

10. Hustle often goes further than raw talent.

11. Patience is a virtue.

12. One ass, one seat.

13. Don't use anonymity as an excuse to be a jerk.

14. Even on a busy sidewalk, you can create a moment of calm.

15. Some things are better left for home.

16. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

17. There are some things you just shouldn't skimp on.

18. Public displays of affection are fine…until they end in tragedy.
